Why is livedrive so slow

February 26th, at 8. Any thoughts? February 27th, at 9. March 3rd, at I have recently had BT Infinity installed predominantly to improve my Upload speeds for online backups such as my Livedrive account When doing speed tests on speedtest. July 7th, at Hi me too. Can only get 90kbs upload and 1 connection. July 26th, at January 27th, at May 17th, at June 28th, at July 29th, at Hello LiveDrive, fancy commenting on these issues?

July 30th, at Name required. What We Like:. First and foremost, we really like the custom options with Livedrive's plans. You can purchase a basic Backup plan and then add in extra computers and even Briefcase features if you want, without buying the full-blown Pro Suite option. This is great if you just want two or three computers instead of the full five like you get with the Pro Suite plan.

We also like that you can back up folders to Livedrive from the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer. This makes backing up easier than having to open the settings and then select the folders you want to upload. While Livedrive is backing up your files, you can tell it to suspend backing up the one it's currently uploading in case it's taking too long, which is handy. It's also useful if you don't necessarily care to back up that particular file right away, and would rather open up that upload room for something more important.

While uploading files through our Livedrive account, we noticed it was using the max speed we allowed the program to use through the bandwidth controls. Overall, in our experience, uploading data to Livedrive was as speedy as most other backup services we've used. It's worth understanding, though, that upload times are dependent on your own network's bandwidth availability as well as other factors.

Something else we like about Livedrive is their mobile apps. If you've backed up music to your account, you can use the built-in music player to find all your music files and play them back right from the app. Documents, images, and videos can also be viewed and streamed through the app, which most people will probably appreciate. You can even set up your mobile device to automatically back up your images and videos, which is great if you like to keep your mobile media files backed up.

What We Don't Like:. The first thing we should mention is that you can only backup folders with Livedrive. What this means is that you can't select an entire hard drive, nor can you choose single files, to backup.

The program only lets you select folders. This means if you want to backup an entire hard drive, you have to place a check next to the folders at its root to ensure all the files inside those folders are actually backed up. Something else we don't like is that Livedrive doesn't back up every single file that you tell it to, which is different than some similar backup services that do backup all files, no matter their file extension. Cookies, browser cache files, settings files, virtual machine files, application data, temporary files, and some system files are permanently disabled from being backed up.

This means there's a handful of files Livedrive won't backup for you, which is worth understanding before you commit to a backup plan.

We also don't like that Livedrive supports keeping only 30 versions of your files. This means after 30 edits of any particular file, the older ones will begin to delete from Livedrive's servers, which means you can't rely on an unlimited number of versions of your files like you can with some other backup services.

Livedrive also only keeps deleted files for 30 days. This means whether you delete the file from your computer, or simply remove the drive that the file was originally located at, you'll only have 30 days before it's permanently irrecoverable from your backups.

When restoring files with Livedrive, you, unfortunately, can't use the web app to download folders, as it only supports restoring files. For restoring folders, you have to use the desktop program. Like cloud storage services, Briefcase allows you to share files with your family and friends and free space on your computer by storing files in the cloud. You can play your music files from the browser, too. Previewing photos manually worked fine, though.

That said, it has file restoration, encryption and versioning, which keeps the last 30 versions of your files. It works on desktop and mobile devices and lets you share files from your storage space. Plus, you can backup photos from your phone. It gives you 5TB of sync storage space and unlimited backup space. You can backup five computers, as well as tablets and mobile devices. The service offers a free day trial with all plans.

There is an easier method in the terms of use. The desktop app lagged several times during our testing, mostly while adding or removing folders from backup. You have to do that because Livedrive requires you to choose specific folders to backup. Plus, you can get in to your account, preview your backed up photos in a gallery or view support information. You can navigate between them using the menu on the left while the features display next to it in a clear and attractive manner.

The mobile app is available for iOS and Android. You can also see files shared with you and open your music files. Music playback is a nice feature that lets you create a playlist and browse music by artist, album, year or genre.

Livedrive selects several folders by default for backup, including desktop, documents, pictures, music and videos. It excludes some files, though, so consult the list on its website to see if they are important for you. Read our Backblaze review to learn more. The restore feature works from the desktop app. You can use the web app to download individual files, too. Initial backups usually take a long time , depending on how much data you have to protect.

To see how Livedrive compares with others in the online backup field, we conducted upload and download tests using a 1GB zipped folder. We were on a WiFi connection out of Belgrade, Serbia, with an upload speed of 6 megabits per second and a download speed of 83 Mbps.

We struggled with testing Livedrive on our second attempt. That said, our subsequent attempts were more successful. It took about an hour, on average, to upload 1GB of data, which is much slower than the 24 minutes it should take in theory.

They also depend on your internet service provider and how close you are to the servers in the UK. You can set Livedrive to ask for a password each time it starts.

Livedrive has servers in secure data centers in the UK. All are ISO certified, which is the standard for information security management systems. You can find services that do in our best zero-knowledge services piece. Still, the service is compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation , which provides adequate protection for EU users.

The support section consists of an FAQ and knowledgebase and a feature that shows service status. The FAQ and knowledgebase are always available, though the search function could be faster when returning results.

You can contact the support team Monday through Friday from 9 a. Greenwich Mean Time. During testing, we got a response in about an hour, which is good. Livedrive used to have separate applications, but now everything is integrated, allowing users to access what they need with ease.

Its adherence to the GDPR is also a plus considering it used to have questionable clauses in its privacy policy. That said, it uses AES bit encryption to scramble your files before uploading them.

Photo preview and storage sync space are valuable additions to its features. Keep that in mind if you have lots of data you want to backup. Let us know in the comments below. Thank you for reading. I would never rely on one cloud backup only because if something happens to one service and i have all my files with them that could be devastating for my business.

Does anybody else besides S3 offer the option of import and export of data by sending physical drive for them to load and return. Cannot see how you access files and sync to S3. Currently, i have both macs set up to use the NAS as their time machine destinations.

I have a lot of data, in total around 5 TB, so the only cloud storage solution that I was taking into consideration was one that would give me unlimited cloud storage and backup.
