Single-day lift tickets will go on sale Dec. Walk-up tickets will no longer be available for purchase at the window, but day-of guests can purchase tickets from their mobile devices and pick them up at the window. Mamula noted that the company seemed to be concerned the state would place capacity limits on all resorts without taking their differences into consideration.
Mamula drew a comparison to when indoor restaurant spaces were capped at 50 people, which felt overly restrictive to larger restaurants. The state later amended its capacity limits for restaurants with more than 7, square feet. On chairlifts and gondolas, related groups can ride together or people from different groups can ride together while maintaining the required distance.
That means two single skiers or riders can ride on opposite sides of a four-person or larger chairlift or in large gondola cabins. On a six-person lift, two doubles can ride on opposite sides of the seat. Lessons and on-mountain dining also will be available with some changes.
Full-service, sit-down restaurants will operate with reduced seating according to existing state guidelines. I generally recommend it over Gondola One to non-skiers.

Slifer Express. For starters, the long consistently steep pitch of Genghis Khan in China Bowl is always a good time. There are more cliffs to huck off of here as well! The Shangri-La Glade will have you weaving between trees and passing in and out of view of people riding up the Orient Express Lift - just mind the tree wells! Ptarmigan Ridge to O. There also tends to be a rush between am and am as the ski and snowboard school classes take to the mountain.
The long runs above Lionshead including Bwana, Born Free and Simba are a good place to start if you're after less trafficked areas. However, with all the acreage, and the variety of terrain, you could explore for a week and still find new trails off the beaten path!
Vail has had families in mind from the start, knowing that attracting returning guests was the key to growing the resort. The trails are laid out such that most front side lifts access terrain of all ability levels, so everyone can ski a trail that suits their abilities or interests yet still reunite at the bottom of the lift. The Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin can be exposed to passing weather systems, so visibility can sometimes be challenging.
Fresh snow can get skied out relatively quickly in the easier-to-get-to bowls, but it lasts longer in the trees and in the farther east Siberia and Mongolia Bowls. Go with a buddy, but only if you both are properly trained and have the right equipment such as a probe, shovel, powder cords, and beacon.
Much of the out of bounds terrain is sensitive wildlife habitat, so to leave the resort area you must exit through a designated gate. Backcountry tours and workshops are available through the Vail Nordic School. A rather well-known backcountry experience for strong intermediates or above is the Miniturn Mile.
This takes you from the top of Game Creek Express 7 to the old mining town of Miniturn and its rustic saloon. You exit through the backcountry gate at the top of Lost Boy, and work your way down till you wind up on an old jeep trail into town. Enjoy some well-earned refreshment at the saloon before the 8 mi car ride back to Vail via taxi, Uber, or bus. Because of the unmarked and unpatrolled terrain, it would be best to find a local guide to go with you!
There are two options for cat skiing. They offer full-day guided cat tours for strong intermediates and up, and have powder skis and snowboards available for use. The other cat operator is Ski Cooper , 26 mi away. They need five people minimum for a tour to launch, but they work to combine smaller groups as necessary to get the right size. They also include lunch, but unlike Vail Powder Guides, their tours are tailored toward advanced to expert skiers and riders.
We always recommend making advance lesson reservations to save money and to ensure availability. Purchase all ski lessons in advance — no walk-up, day-of lessons are available. All sign-ups have to be online or through the EpicMix app. Employees undergo a daily health check. Vail Resorts is ensuring employees stay home if sick. Employees must get vaccinated. The mountain equipment rental locations are open this winter.
Guests and employees wear facial coverings in the shop. For close interactions, employees may wear eye protection and gloves. The employees sanitize and disinfect equipment between use. Look for an expanded rental delivery service, as well. As you can expect, the resorts have instituted property-wide enhanced cleaning measures. They have limited touchpoints at check-in, and have moved to cashless transactions. Being flexible is important when traveling this year.
Vail Resorts have relaxed lodging booking and cancellation policies so guests have the ability to change plans without penalty. We have more tips for flying with skis and on ways to save when flying to Colorado, flying to Lake Tahoe or flying to Utah. What about non-skiing family members? If you have non-skiing family members coming with you on your trip, the resorts are asking that non-skiing and non-riding guest limit their time in the lodges.
Non-skiers should find other things to do. How about any of these ideas for winter family fun beyond the ski slopes. Do your research this year to check on availability in advance and even make reservations if needed.
You can never go wrong with good old snow play, sledding or building a snowman. We love free outdoor entertainment! You may find some services are not operating this season. The ski resorts were not offering childcare for guests the winter season. We have not heard if it returns for , so plan accordingly if you have small tadpoles. A few other fun extras you might usually get to enjoy on the mountain did not take place in We hope they return for We love the champagne toast at Tost on the mountain and free s'mores at Northstar, and warm chocolate chip cookies at Beaver Creek.
Be sure to check ahead of time to find out what services and forms of entertainment are returning or are temporarily suspended at your favorite resort this year prior to your visit — things can and do change! The title of this refers to the policies that will take place for the season. I quickly states that "Vail Resorts does not expect to require reservations next season". Then it goes on to detail the reservation policy and how to do it. Is it going to restrict by reservation or not for the season? Since Vail isn't expecting to restrict by reservation for the upcoming season but hasn't officially confirmed, we left reservation information in just in case! We'll be sure to update once we hear one way or the other.
Do you know why lift tickets are not available for any Vail mountain for the week of our Spring break April 4th? We have skied this week many times in the past.
